Sustainable replacement dwelling within the Wye Valley AONB
This project involved the full replacement of a 1980s bungalow in the village of Catbrook, Monmouthshire - a site nestled within the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The existing building suffered from significant thermal inefficiency, poor-quality construction, and did not meet modern Building Regulations. Our proposal replaces it with a contemporary 4-bedroom family home, sensitively designed to sit within its rural setting.
The new home draws inspiration from the local architectural language, using a grounded brick base with lightweight timber cladding above. A sedum roof, large south-facing glazing, and natural materials help to blend the house into the landscape while enhancing its performance. Internally, the home embraces level changes to follow the site’s natural topography - creating playful, light-filled living spaces with strong visual connections to the garden.
Sustainability was at the core of this project, with integrated solar panels, an air source heat pump, MVHR system, and upgraded drainage strategy. The existing garage has been repurposed for secure cycle storage and topped with a green roof to further support biodiversity.
This design balances contemporary family living with strong environmental performance - demonstrating how replacement dwellings can raise the standard of design in rural contexts.
